Introduction to MAXQDA
Key points
- This course teaches the basic and advanced features of MAXQDA
- You will learn to set-up a MAXQDA project, code and analyse data, and visualise qualitative findings
- The course can be taken on its own or in conjunction with methodological seminars or method courses.
Description
This course provides participants with a strategic understanding and applied skills in using MAXQDA for qualitative data analysis. It is the course you need if you want to learn how to use qualitative software to efficiently manage large amounts of qualitative data, seamlessly triangulate different data sources, enhance analysis with AI Assist, and improve the auditability of your research. The course is structured around four modules that follow the logical sequence of the qualitative analysis process. In turn you will learn to create a MAXQDA project, import and organise data; code your data using both induction and deduction logics; seek patterns and explore relationships across themes and cases; and present your findings using evocative displays.
Description
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Create, import and organise data in MAXQDA
- Use AI Assist to manage their literature review
- Code qualiatitve data using different techniques
- Avoid the coding trap
- Seek patterns across themes and cases
- Generate visualisations.
The course is entirely hands-on and uses sample data to learn MAXQDA’s functionalities. Some time is also allocated to work on one’s own data. Note that this course does not teach the use of MAXQDA for specific qualitative methodologies (thematic analysis, grounded theory, process tracing, QES, etc.).
Prerequisites
Although no previous knowledge of MAXQDA is required, participants should have some familiarity with qualitative research.
Schedule
Two days from 9:00 to 16:00. The course can be shortened to a day upon request.
Location
Online using Zoom or by invitation in universities and research centres. The course is capped at 20 participants.
Pedagogy
The course combines short lectures, demos, hands-on exercises and group work.
Cost
Fee depends on the course duration, number of participants and any prep work for a bespoke application to your research context. Please email me for more information.
Combining courses
This course can be taken on its own or in conjunction with more advanced methodological seminars or method courses.

As a qualitative research consultant, I am on a mission to open the black box of qualitative analysis and challenge the prejudices surrounding subjectivity, bias, and anecdotalism of qualitative research. As you will learn if you work with me, qualitative analysis is systematic, transparent, and traceable, and can yield unique knowledge and insights that quantitative research can't. I train research teams and faculty staff, provide one-on-one coaching to researchers, and teach doctoral-level courses in method schools. I consult for humanitarian aid agencies worldwide in decolonising research and participatory methodologies.
